15 Questions with Guy Love

Posted January 31st, 2015 by Brian Hock

Simple Hydration Run Team member Guy Love (Boulder, Colorado) answers 15 Questions.

Guy Love

1.) What is your favorite color?
Robin Egg Blue Purple
Robin’s Egg Blue and Purple

2.) What is your favorite song right now?

I guess “Ghost” by Halsey, but my music tastes are all over place week to week.

3.) What is your favorite book?

One Hundred Years of Solitude by Gabriel Garcia-Marquez

4.) What is your favorite movie?

I can’t honestly come up with an answer for this; I watch an absurd number of movies and even my favorites can get buried in my head so I’ll just say for 2014: either The LEGO Movie or Birdman.

5.) What is your favorite snack food?

At the moment, banana chips. Way too many banana chips.

6.) What is your favorite word?
Rhythm because it is all consonants.

7.) What runner inspires you?
Eric Grossman. I might not even know ultras exist without him, and he’s helped my so much with getting to where I am now. (Eric’s blog)

8.) What is your favorite workout?
Mile all out, 2×800, 4×400, 8×200 @ blowout pace. It’s even better as the second workout of a big mileage day ;)

9.) What is your favorite running shoe?

Nike Lunaracers

10.) What is your favorite race medal or award?

When I finished the Beast Series in Virginia in 2012 I got this Grizzly bear “trophy” on a granite plinth that weighs in at about 15 lbs.

11.) What race would you highly recommend?

Hellgate 100k. If you can get in that is. Really any of the races David Horton and Clark Zealand put on; the East Coast doesn’t get enough credit on the ultra scene.

12.) Have you ever bonked in a race?
Oh most certainly, sometimes more than once.

13.) How many miles have you covered without walking during a run or race?

50! I ran Stone Mill 50 in November with my #1 goal being not to walk a step (discounting the few steps in/out of aid stations)

14.) Do you prefer running in the summer or winter?
Summer. I love snow but the summer is much more simple.

15.) What is a fun fact about you?

I’ve never used chapstick before! That is my go-to answer for never-have-I-ever.

Q&A with Simple Hydration Ultra Racing Team Runner Scotty Hawker

Posted January 28th, 2015 by Brian Hock

Scotty Hawker

Name: Scott “Scotty” Hawker
Age: 28
Height: 5’7″ (173cm)
Location: Perth, Western Australia

Q. Where did you grow up? What was it like growing up in that area and specifically how did it influence your running?

A. I grew up in Christchurch, New Zealand. It was amazing growing up in the South Island of New Zealand. When I was younger my parents and my Uncle used to take me and my little brother on tramping (or hiking) trips. From a young age we were exposed to the amazing New Zealand Wilderness.

Q. Does anyone else in your family run?

A. My wife Liz. Mum and Dad. 2 Uncles and 3 Aunties.

Q. Did you play any sports in high school?

A. I played soccer and softball up until I was 17. I was in New Zealand academy teams throughout my teenage years. In 2004 I received a dispensation at age 17 to run the Christchurch Marathon. I ran 3:10. I dabbled in duathlons in my late teens and placed 8th at the NZ Duathlon Championships in 2005.

Q. Did you run in college/university?

A. In my final year at University I started training for the Coast to Coast Multisport Race (243km of cycling, running and kayaking across the South Island of NZ). I placed 3rd in the Two Day Individual which was my introduction to endurance sport.

Q. What made you decide to take up ultra running?

A. After moving to Australia in March 2011 after the Coast to Coast my first run on Australian soil was 46km. The idea of running longer than a marathon seemed pretty cool at the time. From there I basically just started running further and further.

Q. Do you live in Australia or is it just for training purposes?

A. Yes I live in Perth at the moment. My wife has family over there as she was born in a small country town 4hrs south of Perth. We are shifting to the Blue Mountains in NSW in April. Perth has been great but summer is very hot and it is very flat there so the Blue Mountains will offer much better training opportunities.

Q. Do you have a coach or follow specific training program?

A. I am coached by Andy DuBois from Mile27 Coaching. Andy has taken my running to a completely different level since we started working together 1 year ago.

Q. Tell us about your experience with competitive ultra running. What about it do you love?

A. I love the idea that I am competing against some of the best endurance athletes around the globe. I love to win but it is more about the journey and pushing myself and seeing what I am capable of. I think the competition helps bring out the best in me.

Scotty Hawker Running

Q. What are your personal bests (PBs) at various distances?

A. I don’t really run races on the road. I have only run one 10k race which was at the end of a 100 mile training week. I ran 34:40. My ‘Marathon P.B’ is currently 2:51 which I ran dressed up as Mr Incredible. I have never trained and raced a marathon other than when I was 17. My 50km trail P.B is 3:50 (1600m+gain) and my 100km Trail P.B is 8:02. My biggest international results to date are 5th at Hong Kong 100 in 2014, 5th at Tarawera Ultra in 2014 and 7th at Lavaredo Ultra Trail in 2014.

Scotty Hawker as Mr. Incredible

Q. What person(s) in running inspire(s) you?

A. My Dad and my Uncle. They both continually blow me away with their strength and performances on the roads and mountains.

Q. Looking back over your running career thus far, what was your best or favorite race and why?

A. Easily the Lavaredo Ultra Trail (Dolomites, Italy). The trails, scenery, people and the whole atmosphere of the race was incredible. I am looking forward to going back this year for another crack.

Q. Is there any event or adventure that you would like to do one day?

A. I would really love to climb Mt Cook in New Zealand. It is New Zealand’s highest peak (3754m)

Q. What is a typical week of training right now?

A. I run generally 5-6 days a week. Sessions include hill repeats, tempo sessions and a long run. Pretty much all of my training is done on the trails, I really don’t like the road very much.

Q. At what distance do you take water/hydration with you on a run?

A. Generally in Perth winter I only take water on runs over 2hrs. In summer it is a completely different story. I have to take water for every session regardless of the duration.

Q. What was you reaction to the Simple Hydration Bottle when you first saw it?

A. I was immediately interested as soon as I saw them. The idea of having a hydration method that kept my hands free and didn’t involve a pack or belt really appealed to me.

Q. What was your reaction to the Simple Hydration Bottle after using it?

A. It has been absolutely fantastic. The first time I used it I almost forgot I had it tucked into my shorts. It wasn’t until my wife asked me at the top of the stairs I was training on that I remembered I had it with me.

Q. How do you use the bottle in your training?

A. I use the bottle on pretty much every training session now. It’s really become my go to piece of kit for my hydration needs. I can use it solo or also additionally with a pack or vest if I need to carry more water.

Q. What races do you have planned for 2015?

A. January – Croesus Crossing Goat Race (Barrytown, New Zealand). Ultra Easy 100km (Albert Town, New Zealand)
Note: Scotty won both races in January.
April – Buffalo Stampede Sky Marathon 42km (Victoria, Australia AUS/NZ Skyrunning Race).
May – TNF100 Australia (Blue Mountains, Australia).
June – Lavaredo Ultra Trail (Cortina, Italy).
August – UTMB (France).
October – Hounslow Classic (Blackheath, Australia, AUS/NZ Skyrunning Race).
December – Kepler Challenge (Te Anau, New Zealand)

Q. Anything else you would like to add about yourself?

A. I love nothing more than getting out in the mountains with my wife Liz. Running and racing is fantastic but spending time running trails and exploring with Liz is the best!

You can follow Scotty on his blog Running Adventures and Finding Elevation.

15 Questions with Joshua Addison

Posted January 27th, 2015 by Brian Hock

We asked each Simple Hydration Run Team member to answer 15 questions so that our fans can learn more about each member. We think it will be a fun way to see what makes each member tick. First up is Joshua Addison out of Boulder, Colorado.

Joshua Addison

1.) What is your favorite color?
Mossy Green
Mossy Green

2.) What is your favorite song right now?

“Dirty Paws” by Of Monsters and Men

3.) What is your favorite book?
Joshua Addison Book
Jitterbug Perfume by Tom Robbins

4.) What is your favorite movie?

Joe Dirt

5.) What is your favorite snack food?
I usually go for a peanut butter and banana sandwich.

6.) What is your favorite word?

Happy

7.) What runner inspires you?
Any runner who relentlessly pursues their dream is a runner who gives me inspiration.

8.) What is your favorite workout?
Run up a mountain as hard as I can, and then crush the descent on the way down.

9.) What is your favorite running shoe?
Addison Shoe
Inov8 Trailroc 235

10.) What is your favorite race medal or award?
My finisher award from my first 50k, the Fire on the Mountain 50k. The medal just means a lot to me because it was my first ultra.

11.) What race would you highly recommend?
Quad Rock
Quad Rock 50 Miler

12.) Have you ever bonked in a race?
I have bonked many times. I think it is part of racing. If you don’t fail sometimes you aren’t trying to max out your own potential.

13.) How many miles have you covered without walking during a run or race?
Oh, I’d say low 20′s. Usually the races I do have big mountains, resulting in sections where hiking the climb is more efficient.

14.) Do you prefer running in the summer or winter?
Running in every season is great to me. Each has both pros and cons, but generally I just love to run. If the snow is dumping, I am almost beckoned to the hills, just as I am on a cool 60 degree day. Every day of running is great, even if it hurts and the weather is tough.

15.) What is a fun fact about you?
Organic Graphic
I have spent multiple summers living out of a vehicle, both alone and with friends, traveling the USA and running in beautiful places. I’m also a devout vegetarian, purchasing only organic food at the grocery store.

Simple Hydration Bottle Appeared in Many Documentaries and Movies in 2014

Posted January 8th, 2015 by Brian Hock

2014 was a good year for the Simple Hydration Bottle as far as getting some nice air time in running documentaries and movies. Below is a list of our Top 10 in no specific order.

1 | Running For Life | Badwater UltraMarathon Race 2014 – Documentary | Carlos Sá Ultra Runner
This is an excellent documentary on the 2014 Badwater UltraMarathon. This Portuguese documentary follows the race of Carlos Sa (3rd place in 2014, winner in 2013). Most people don’t know that the Simple Hydration Bottle was the main bottle used by Carlos and his team in the 2014 race. Simple Hydration did sponsor the 2014 team and winner of the race Harvey Lewis.

2 | Coast To Kosciuszko 2014 – Mick Thwaites & Mo’s On The Run
This documentary follows Australian runner Mick Thwaites, a long-time fan and customer of the Simple Hydration, as he runs in Australia’s longest race. The Simple Hydration Bottle gets a lot of air time in the movie and Mick moves up through the pack to eventually land on the podium.
